Yaya Deng was one of the 12 finalists on Season 1 (AUS) of The Face, who was a member of Team Cheyenne. She was one of the runner-ups of the season alongside Sarah Tilleke, who lost to Olivia Donaldson in the finale.
Yaya first entered a modelling competition in a shopping centre when she was 14. She made the finals in Melbourne where she was spotted and signed up to Darling Management. She remained in Melbourne for two years, during which she did a shoot for Rock Ebony and MX Magazine as well as some runway shows and hair modelling, before giving it up to concentrate on her studies.
Yaya is currently studying a Bachelor of Arts and Science at Sydney University, and is signed with Chic Management in Sydney. Yaya was born in Kenya but her whole family are Sudanese who fled to Kenya before she was born. Yaya and her family left Kenya for Australia when she was eight, and she now lives with her two brothers and sister in Sydney’s Western Suburbs.
Yaya says she is competitive, but having fun is also important to her. She’s worried about being intimidated and then not performing as well as she could. She wants to prove to her family that she can do this for herself. She’s spent her whole life being the youngest, babied one and wants to show she is just as strong as the rest of her family.
